Let Lenders Compete For Your Loan Needs

How to Become a Column Writer

Even if you have average writing ability, you can still become a newspaper or magazine column writer. News organizations are always looking for reliable columnists to cover exciting stories in a variety of venues--from special events to sports. Here is how you can prepare yourself to be a regular contributor to your favorite magazine or newspaper.

Getting your foot in the newsroom door

Believe it or not, the only difference between you and a professional newspaper columnist is that editors are aware of them, but you are an unknown. Fortunately, there are some simple steps that you can take to get past the initial hurdle of anonymity. While no specific education is required to begin writing for magazines and newspapers, the willingness to do lots of research and shape your writing to an editor's preferences is vital.

Fundamental column writing skills

Some basic skills that will serve you well as a column writer are a general interest in current events, a solid knowledge of the English language, and an eye for detail. These qualities can easily be developed by writing sample stories about events you've attended or subjects you're knowledgeable about. Another advantage of writing your own samples is that you will have them to send to news editors to show them your work.

Finding work as a writer

When looking for a writing job, use the Internet or white pages to find the contact information of online and print newspapers and magazines. You will be looking for an editor or creative director. Send them an e-mail and writing sample, and let them know of your writing ambitions and you availability. You will be surprised by the response you get--if your sample assignments are top quality.
