South Dakota Seasons and Weather
South Dakota Seasons
The climate of South Dakota rolls from season to season like the buffalo across the vast plains of the Native Americans after whom the state is named. Whether you are in Aberdeen, Sioux Falls or Pierre, the state capital, you will experience little variation in temperature and climate from one city to the next. From mid-spring to early fall, travel across the state is easy and fun because helpful travel counselors maintain Information Centers at rest areas across the state.
Warm Summer, Cool Autumn
Warm--sometimes hot--days with cool nights, dominate the South Dakota summers across the state. Temperatures average in the low 80's during the day with a drop to the 50's and 60's after sundown. Late September marks the transition to fall's cooler weather. The temperature starts dropping, though still providing for mild days in the 70's, with evening lows approaching freezing as you get into November. If you are looking to travel or relocate to South Dakota, any time between May and October is ideal.
Rain and Snow
South Dakota winters are dominated by snow, the flakes beginning to fall as early as November. Temperatures can drop at night into the teens and below in December and January, making it a perfect time for winter sports. Spring brings the rainy season to South Dakota with showers possible through early May. The temperature climbs rapidly from the low 40's and 50's of March into the 70's of May. Primarily sunny days make spring and summer the ideal time for travel and tourism.
