Virginia Seasons and Travel
Virginia's Climate
With a mild, sub-tropical climate, Virginia is for lovers. Bordered on the east by the Atlantic and on the west by the Appalachians, Virginia's is a stunning landscape of mountains, valleys, and coastlines that welcome travel year-round. Temperatures are mild, and the four seasons are distinct. However, as you travel into the upper regions, you'll experience colder winters and cooler summers. Virginia is a hilly, forested state and an excellent place to relocate if you're looking for peace and quiet.
Regional Differences
Virginia has five different climate regions with some variety in temperature as you travel through the state. However, across the state, the seasons are mild and comfortable. On the coast, summers are warmer with some humidity from the Atlantic, but even in the hottest months the temperatures average between 71 and 85 degrees. The mountainous western region tends to be cooler year-round--and certainly less humid. Temperatures in the high 30's are the state average for winter. Virginia rainfall averages about 40 inches each year, with slightly more rain in the higher elevations.
Backwoods Beauty
From Richmond to Roanoke, Virginia Beach to Arlington, this is a state of panoramic views and quiet river valleys. The rural areas offer plenty for those who enjoy outdoor recreation. If you are looking for a perfect tan in the summer, the coast could hardly be better. In early October the leaves begin to change color through most of the state, so if you enjoy such fall displays, then autumn is a perfect time of year to visit.
