Weather and Travel in Wisconsin

by Gabriel Traverso

Wisconsin Weather

While Wisconsin enjoys four distinct seasons, it is probably best known for its winters. If you are a winter sports lover you can be sure to find plenty to do in Wisconsin. The seasons of Wisconsin vary greatly throughout the state with cooler weather in the north versus warmer southern temperatures. The Great Lakes play a key role in the climate, moderating the temperatures of the surrounding areas. This results in greater humidity around the lakes and therefore more snow in the winter--as much as 350 inches in a single year in some places.

Spring in Bloom, Autumn Color

In spring the endless, rolling hills of Wisconsin offer a picture-perfect landscape for travel and tourism. For those who like the outdoors, the pleasant weather between spring and fall lets you enjoy the state parks and recreation areas of Wisconsin. Then, the wildflowers and lush green landscape transform into the gold and red of autumn that beckons "leaf spotters" year after year. The mild climate of Wisconsin, with daytime highs of 70 to 80 degrees in the hottest months, gives way to cool nights. Remember to dress in layers.

Snow!

From Milwaukee to Madison, the winters of Wisconsin are dominated by snow with an average of 16 inches statewide but can be much higher around the Great Lakes. The average winter temperatures are far below freezing, as well as below the US average. With a long ski season and plenty of recreation opportunities, Wisconsin is a state for those who love winter.
