West Virginia Weather and Travel

by Gabriel Traverso

The Climate of West Virginia

West Virginia is located in the central Appalachian Mountains and one of the most rural states in the region. Consequently, one of the biggest draws for tourism is its natural scenery and mountain landscapes. Year round, the seasons of West Virginia are mild and pleasant, not too hot in the summer and not too cold in the winter. If you are looking for a quiet and scenic place to relocate, you couldn't ask for a better state than West Virginia.

Cool and Mild

West Virginia has a mild but slightly humid climate with warm summers and cold winters. From region to region the climate can vary greatly, primarily because of the differences in altitude. You'll find cooler temperatures and more rain and snow in the upper eastern Appalachians of the state. In the low-lying areas and valleys of West Virginia the winters are very mild and the summers pleasant and warm.

Green Mountains

On average the state sees about 40 inches of rain each year, with a little more in the upper mountain regions. January is the coldest month and July is the warmest, but both seasons are mild in their extremes unless you plan on traveling into the more mountainous central region. There you will experience colder weather in the winter. Whether you're in Charleston or Petersburg, West Virginia offers only beautiful, green mountain vistas and twisting forest roads itching for your exploration. The rural landscape of West Virginia provides the traveler with many opportunities for outdoor recreation and fun.
