Medical Insurance Billing Degree Programs

We all know that going to the doctor is expensive.  If you don’t have health insurance, it’s expensive for you.  If you have health insurance, the insurance company will usually pick up most of your tab, but even the partial amount you have to pay may cause you to wince.  We also wince every time it is time to pay our health insurance premiums.

Have you ever wondered how all of those bills are tabulated, and how rates are applied to certain treatments you receive?  The answer is very interesting, and it also illuminates a career field that may be up your alley.  After a patient has been seen, diagnosed, and given treatment, a physician will record all that was done on the patient’s medical record.  A medical insurance billing specialist assigns a code to each diagnosis and procedure. They consult classification manuals and rely, also, on their knowledge of disease processes. Billing specialists then use a software program to assign the patient to one of several hundred "diagnosis-related groups," or DRG's. The DRG determines the amount the hospital will be reimbursed if the patient is covered by Medicare or other insurance programs using the DRG system.

Medical insurance billing specialists entering the field usually have an associate’s degree from a community or junior college. In addition to general education, coursework includes medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, legal aspects of health information, coding and abstraction of data, statistics, database and billing management, quality improvement methods, and computer training. Applicants can improve their chances of admission into a program by taking biology, chemistry, health, and computer courses in high school.
