Some of America is finally waking up to the notion of healthy living.  Probably due to the fact that obesity and heart problems have become a virtual epidemic in our increasingly unhealthy society, many people have started taking a closer look at how they can stem the rising tide of health dysfunction in their own lives.  Of course, good nutrition is always a first step towards healthy living, but many have altered their thinking about where they look for treatment when faced with an ailment, sickness, or discomfort.  In the past, people would head straight to their doctor when faced with a malady of any sort, and they would typically be prescribed some sort of medication that would relieve their symptoms.  This is of course a needed practice in many situations, but looking at the source of an ailment—lifestyle, environment, etc.—and making changes in oneself instead of relying in medication, has also proven to be effective.  This type of remedy is much like preventative medicine, and much of it takes place under the umbrella of holistic or naturopathic medical practices.

It is the art and science of disease diagnosis, treatment and prevention using natural therapies and gentle techniques.  Doctors of naturopathic medicine are specialists in natural medicine and preventive health care, integrating scientific knowledge with traditional healing wisdom. They are health-care professionals who use safe, gentle, non-invasive therapies to assist the whole person in maximizing the body's inherent self-healing capacity.

If you want to become a doctor of naturopathy, there are college and other institutes that offer two- to four- year programs.  For those that are in other professions, and need to maintain those jobs while earning a degree in naturopathy, there are online programs available that can help make your learning process more flexible.
