Pharmacy Tech Degree Programs

When you go to your pharmacist to pick up a prescription, have you ever noticed how many prescription medications are sitting on the shelves waiting to be picked up?  Often, the pharmacist’s back room is filled with them.  While a pharmacist is ultimately in charge everything that goes from his laboratory to a patient, he does often rely on other people to do some work for him, because much of that work doesn’t require the depth of knowledge needed to ensure the safety of the patient.  These people are called pharmacy technicians.

Pharmacy technicians help licensed pharmacists provide medication and other healthcare products to patients. Technicians usually perform routine tasks to help prepare prescribed medication for patients, such as counting tablets and labeling bottles. Technicians refer any questions regarding prescriptions, drug information, or health matters to a pharmacist.  Pharmacy technicians, because they require less education and training than an actual pharmacist, are paid less.  Because of this fact, many more of them are being hired in commercial pharmacies in order to keep costs down.

Formal pharmacy technician education programs require classroom and laboratory work in a variety of areas, including medical and pharmaceutical terminology, pharmaceutical calculations, pharmacy record keeping, pharmaceutical techniques, and pharmacy law and ethics. Technicians also are required to learn medication names, actions, uses, and doses. Many training programs include internships, in which students gain hands-on experience in actual pharmacies. Students receive a diploma, a certificate, or an associate degree, depending on the program.
