If you are seeking a career in the legal profession, there are many different law colleges and legal degree programs in the United States to choose from. Programs vary in length and requirements and are designed to best fit your goals and what you are seeking in a legal education. Degrees offered in most states include a Juris Doctor which will enable you to become a licensed attorney and to develop the widest range of career opportunities within the legal professions; an A.A.S, B.S. degree or Certificate in Paralegal Studies which will prepare you for employment in the legal profession by providing you with basic legal skills and knowledge of the legal work environment and how the legal field works; and varying degrees in Criminal Justice which will give you a broad legal foundation and prepare you for careers in the areas of law enforcement, courts, corrections and security.
There are over 57 colleges and universities in the state of Florida offering degrees in the legal field. The Florida State Bar is the third largest mandatory state bar in the United States and has a membership of over 74,000. The Bar has its own Legal Career Center which helps bring legal professionals and employers together, however any lawyer desiring to practice law in Florida must first pass a character and fitness exam as well as the Florida State Bar exam and be approved by the Florida Supreme Court. There are however no laws in Florida regulating paralegals. The Florida Bar provides many services to its members as well as to the public, including administration of a public information program and continuing education services for lawyers.
