Degrees offered in most states include a Juris Doctor which will enable you to become a licensed attorney and to develop the widest range of career opportunities within the legal professions; an A.A.S, B.S. degree or Certificate in Paralegal Studies which will prepare you for employment in the legal profession by providing you with basic legal skills and knowledge of the legal work environment and how the legal field works; and varying degrees in Criminal Justice which will give you a broad legal foundation and prepare you for careers in the areas of law enforcement, courts, corrections and security.
There are 20 colleges and universities in the state of Louisiana offering degrees in the legal profession. The mission of this profession in the state of Louisiana is to assist and serve the public and state legal professionals in the practice of law by ensuring access to legal services and promoting the professional competency of attorneys and legal professionals, as well as increasing public understanding of and respect for the law. The Louisiana Access to Justice Program, a cooperative venture of the Louisiana State Bar Association and other legal services programs in the state, is a service provided to make both the public and state legal professionals aware of the unmet needs of the poor for civil legal services. The program consists of personnel who work towards obtaining proper funding of legal service providers and assist these service providers in their efforts to provide legal help to the public of Louisiana.
