If you are seeking a career in the legal profession, there are many different law colleges and legal degree programs in the United States to choose from. Programs vary in length and requirements and are designed to best fit your goals and what you are seeking in a legal education. Degrees offered in most states include a Juris Doctor which will enable you to become a licensed attorney and to develop the widest range of career opportunities within the legal professions; an A.A.S, B.S. degree or Certificate in Paralegal Studies which will prepare you for employment in the legal profession by providing you with basic legal skills and knowledge of the legal work environment and how the legal field works; and varying degrees in Criminal Justice which will give you a broad legal foundation and prepare you for careers in the areas of law enforcement, courts, corrections and security.

There are more than 3,100 lawyers licensed to practice in the state of Maine each of which is a member of the Maine State Bar Association. The MSBA is a volunteer professional and public service organization that works to promote professionalism and continued learning within the legal profession by helping members to advance their skills and knowledge in order to meet the legal needs of the people of Maine and to advance Maine’s system of justice. Because it is a private, voluntary organization it is separate from any branch of government and plays no role in the admission of people to the practice of law and no role in the regulation or discipline of lawyers.
