If you are seeking a career in the legal profession, there are many different law colleges and legal degree programs in the United States to choose from. Degrees offered in most states include a Juris Doctor which will enable you to become a licensed attorney and to develop the widest range of career opportunities within the legal professions; an A.A.S, B.S. degree or Certificate in Paralegal Studies which will prepare you for employment in the legal profession by providing you with basic legal skills and knowledge of the legal work environment and how the legal field works; and varying degrees in Criminal Justice which will give you a broad legal foundation and prepare you for careers in the areas of law enforcement, courts, corrections and security.
There are 10 colleges and universities in the state of Mississippi offering degrees in the legal profession. Historians have recognized the Mississippi State Bar Association as the first state bar association in the United States. Organized in 1821, the association was created for the purpose of continued learning among legal professionals and to protect the honor and respectability of the profession. Since then the Mississippi State Bar has grown to an organization of more than 7,000 members, and continues to contribute to improving the administration of justice in Mississippi. Following its traditions, the Mississippi State Bar has adopted mandatory continued legal education for attorneys in Mississippi as well as the establishment of numerous other programs and projects designed to benefit both the public and the legal profession in the state of Mississippi.
