If you are seeking a career in the legal profession, there are many different law colleges and legal degree programs in the United States to choose from. Programs vary in length and requirements and are designed to best fit your goals and what you are seeking in a legal education. Degrees offered in most states include a Juris Doctor which will enable you to become a licensed attorney and to develop the widest range of career opportunities within the legal professions; an A.A.S, B.S. degree or Certificate in Paralegal Studies which will prepare you for employment in the legal profession by providing you with basic legal skills and knowledge of the legal work environment and how the legal field works; and varying degrees in Criminal Justice which will give you a broad legal foundation and prepare you for careers in the areas of law enforcement, courts, corrections and security.
There are 7 colleges and universities in the state of Oregon offering degrees in the legal field. The Oregon State Bar Association was first established by the Oregon Legislative Assembly to license and discipline lawyers and to regulate the practice of law in the state of Oregon as well as provide services both to bar members and the public. Membership is mandatory for lawyers who wish to practice law in the state of Oregon and there are currently 13,000 active and inactive members. Of those members, just over half work in private practice, the rest work in government, corporate or other settings. A fourth of the members of the Oregon State Bar Association are women.
