If you are interested in working as a probation officer, supervising criminal offenders who are on probation, a criminal justice probation degree will start you on that career path.

Many colleges offer associate's degree criminal justice programs.  In such a program you will acquire knowledge of criminal justice theory.  You'll typically learn about corrections, juvenile delinquency, probation and parole, and the rehabilitation of offenders.  You may take courses in criminal law, forensic evidence, criminal investigation, corporate security, criminal justice administration, the operations of jails and prisons, and psychology.  Once you have completed your degree you'll have the academic experience necessary to pursue a career as a probation officer. You will usually work for community and correctional facilities or for the federal government. Your task will be to supervise offenders who have been convicted of a crime but not sentenced to actual prison time.  You must make sure that offenders meet the requirements of their probation and you may play a part in planning their rehabilitation.

A few colleges offer BS criminal justice degrees.  These programs cover all the topics of the associate's degree programs.  Additionally, they emphasize communications and general education topics, providing a broader education that may enhance your job-finding potential.

A criminal justice degree can also give you job opportunities in parole, law enforcement, courts, and corrections.
