Network Systems Education Schools

In the 80's, computers boosted productivity. In the 90's it was networks of computers that made the difference. Now in the 00's it's a network of networks -- another way of describing the Internet.

The bottom line is that networks are critical. Expertise in them can open many job doors fast. Networking is complex subject. You need to specialize. A growing number of schools let you select from a broad array of certification and coursework in different kinds of networking expertise.

Choose from disciplines like network support or network design. Gain expertise in routing and switching, LANS, WANS, network security, LAN-based ATM, voice access, or SNA solutions. (It becomes easy in this field to dazzle people at cocktail parties). Networking is getting too complex for any one individual to understand it all, said Chris Berriman, a education product marketing manager at Cisco, which is one of the primary companies in the network field. Berriman told Computerworld that workers should specialize, and then collaborate with others on integration projects.

"There is a growing demand for people who have a credential in a given set of products from a particular vendor or in a particular technology," Berriman says. "The credential tells people you really know what you are doing in a given area."
