Computer Information Systems and Computer Management Degrees

The most important asset of a typical company is its employees. The second most important asset is often the information that guides those employees. How does that information reach employees and empower them? That's a challenge the kind of challenge that a degree in computer information systems or computer management can prepare you to conquer.

It's also a challenge critical to today's companies. That's why the U.S. Department of Labor says that computer and information systems managers are one of the 10 fastest growing career fields. There were about 284,000 computer and information systems managers in 2002, according to the Occupational Outlook Handbook , with many new jobs to be created.

A good degree prepares you for the field by sharpening both your technical and business skills. Courses give expertise in areas such as sophisticated networking, intranet site management, security, e-commerce and wireless.

How much can you make? Robert Half International reports that the average starting salaries in 2003 for high-level information technology managers ranged from $82,750 to $151,500. A 2003 survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers tracked the starting salary for those with an MBA, a technical undergraduate degree, and 1 year or less of experience at an average of $54,643. With a master's degree in management information systems/business data processing, the starting salary averaged $43,750.
