Healthcare Information Technologies Degrees

A healthcare information technologies degree can prepare you to be a medical records and health information technician. What does this job consist of? You'd be organizing and evaluating medical records. It's a key step in keeping the healthcare industry running properly. Every time a patient receives healthcare, a record is made of what occurs. This includes information on symptoms and medical history, and results of exams, x rays, laboratory tests and more. As a medical records and health information technician, the completeness and accuracy of these medical records, and their proper coding, would be your responsibility.

It's a growing job category. There were about 147,000 medical records and health information technicians at work in 2002, according to the U.S. Dept. of Labor. Job openings are expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations through 2012, due to rapid growth in consumption of healthcare.

Technicians entering the field usually have an associate degree from a community or junior college. In addition to general education, the Dept. of Labor says, coursework includes medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, legal aspects of health information, coding and abstraction of data, statistics, database management, quality improvement methods, and computer science.

Median annual earnings of medical records and health information technicians were $23,890 in 2002. The highest 10 percent earned more than $38,640.
