Software Development Schools and Education

Software Development is the planning and design of new or improved software applications with the aim of making computer systems work more efficiently and meet needs more effectively. The Software Developer finds out what the functions of the software are supposed to be and then designs and tests new software that will meet these requirements.

Most Software Developers hold four-year degrees in subjects such as Computer Science, Information Systems, Computer Engineering or Systems Analysis, or they might have started with a 2-year degree and added courses while working. In addition to formal qualifications they will usually have several years programming experience.

Government studies such as Computing Research Association's The Supply of Information Technology Workers in the United States show that career prospects for those with the appropriate level of education and experience are good. Opportunities exist in developing software for the corporate sector, for end-users (such as computer games or educational tools), for embedded systems (used in things like cars and industrial machines) for internal networks and for research and development. All of these areas require proficiency in programming languages, but different languages and platforms are used in different types of work so before deciding which languages to specialize in it is important to consider the kind of work you want to do.
