This little Cascarone is one of the important things of Fiesta in San Antonio and I decided that since there are others out there grading movies with stars, jalapenos, and other more common things...I'd introduce my symbol as the real way to grade movie's I've seen...the cascarone!

George Lucas

Spider-Man
[PG-13]

Toby McGuire, Kirsten Dundst, Willem Defoe

Look at that outfit, great, isn't it? Well, the fact that we don't see it often enough could be said about what is good about SPIDERMAN. Just not enough of a good thing! The movie fall short on action and crime busting. Toby McGuire is just not enough of a screen presence to take this movie over the top for me. (I realize, after the incredible box office performance of this picture, anything I say negative will make me look like a boob...er...so?...read on, please)

McGuire is perfect at the nerdy Peter Parker, but his transformation as our super-hero just didn't measure up. Why not a Jude Law or even a Hugh Grant? The list could go on. When he is bitten by a spider and genetically aquires his spider-like qualities...there are so many neat and cool possibilities it boggles the mind. Yet the makers of this flick decided to just display his powers mostly in his own discovery scenes instead of crime fighting. Oh yes, there are some, like the scene where he is confronted with the choice of saving a group of tourists or his love, Mary Jane,(Kirsten Dundst). The action in that scene (he saves them all) is just too campy. I mean, c'mon, we're talking SPIDERman here....I want more web weaving, etc! Too disappointing!

Willem Defoe is...well, Willem Defoe. He's terrific as the Green Goblin, although his costume was more Star Wars looking than Green Goblin looking. His mask doesn't allow Defoe's incredible facial displays to come though. Better to paint his face green! Ok, I'm being way too critical of this mega-hit. The kids will love it, the Spiderman comic book followers probably will, also. I never even saw a Spiderman comic book as a child. This may have kept me from being as gushy now about the whole web mystique.

I guess in this World Wide Web (ouch), I expected more and was genuinely disappointed. Although I was ready to heap praise on the "movie of the year", along came a spider and I can only give this one 2 1/2 "cascarones". But, go see it...I'm sure most will love SPIDERMAN, the movie.
