Motto She Flies With Her Own Wings” was adopted as Oregon's state motto in 1987. Judge Jessie Quinn Thornton is credited with originating the motto, which was pictured on the territorial seal in Latin: Alis Volat Propiis. Few people know what it means, but it's far better than the former motto, an amazingly boring “The Union,” adopted in 1957.
