South Carolina Botanical Garden

(Clemson University, Clemson)
Adopted in 1992.

The Botanical Garden at Clemson University was designated South Carolina's State Botanical Garden by Act No. 288, 1992. Today, it is considered one of the State's most beautiful and diverse public gardens, its 270 acres of woodlands, meadows and streams are home to wildflower, fern, bog and turf gardens, a pioneer village, a braille trail and a special garden for the walking impaired. Considered an outstanding educational resource, the Garden has more than 100,000 visitors each year who come to observe, study and explore nature's endless wonders. The Garden hosts numerous cultural events throughout the year, offering a glorious setting "where nature and culture meet."

The garden was begun in 1957 as a small camellia collection on a reclaimed landfill site. Today the Garden is a 295-acre public garden offering a diversity of cultivated and natural landscapes and year-round public programming. The Botanical Garden is located on the campus of Clemson University. Over 2,200 varieties of ornamental plants are raised in the 270-acre consolidation of smaller gardens. Aazalea and camellia trails; wildflowers, fern and bog gardens; nature trails; a pioneer garden labeled in Braille; and the flower and turf display garden of bedding plants and turf grasses are some of what visitors can see.

Types of Gardens/Collections:
Arboretum, Butterfly, Display Garden, Native Plant, Perennial, Research, Wetlands, Xeriscape

The Garden is open free to the public from dawn to dusk every day of the year.

The mission of the South Carolina Botanical Garden is to serve as an interdisciplinary public garden whose focus is research and education in the areas of botanical and cultural conservation and the environment.
